Intel’s Core i9-14900KS processor is hitting the shelves today, reaching a maximum clock speed of 6.2GHz. However, Asus and the PC overclocking team ElmorLabs have set a new record by using liquid helium to briefly surpass the 9.1GHz speed limit with this processor.
Intel’s latest desktop processor reached 9.1GHz speed with liquid helium
In December 2022, Jon Sandström, the founder of ElmorLabs, achieved a speed of 9,008MHz using Intel’s Core i9-13900K processor. Now, with the new Intel Core i9-14900KS chip, he has reached a slightly higher speed of 9,117.75MHz.
To achieve this feat, Sandström placed the processor on the $649 Asus ROG Maximum Z790 Apex Encore motherboard. Overclockers typically use liquid nitrogen to cool down the significant heat generated when running a PC chip beyond normal limits.
However, Sandström and his team opted for liquid helium, which can reach even colder temperatures. ElmorLabs released a video of the event showing the processor placed in a cooling chamber filled with liquid helium, with a fan blowing away the resulting vapor.
Liquid helium forced the PC to boot Windows at -193 degrees Celsius (-315.4 Fahrenheit). Temperatures dropped even further, reaching -231 degrees Celsius when the Intel chip hit 9.1GHz speed on one of its performance cores.
This development is an exciting step forward for computer hardware, pushing the boundaries of technology by overclocking with liquid helium. The cooling capacity of liquid helium and the records achieved in extreme overclocking demonstrate the future potential of computer processors.
